Rick Winters is marking his 25th year in business and is still doing innovative work.

Winters is the owner of Winters Energy Heating/Cooling/Fireplaces business at 410 State St. in Downtown Alton. Much of Winters’ time has been spent in geothermal and radiant heat work.

Some of Winters’ most impressive jobs are installing geothermal and radiant heat in President Ulysses S. Grant’s home at Grant’s Farm in St. Louis. He recently attended a Radiant Heating/Cooling Expo in Chicago.

“Working hard and doing the job right the first time are the most important things for me,” he said. “I follow up on everything. I also buy the best of material. The quality of work brings it back.”

Winters is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a finance degree. His father, Paul, was in heating and cooling his entire life, and once Rick graduated from college he joined his father. Rick worked his way up to a 49 percent owner of ABC Total Comfort Center before starting out on his own 25 years ago.

Rick Winters is a big proponent of using renewable energy.

“We pull the heat from the ground in the summer and transfer it into the house with geothermal heating, and conversely pull heat from the house and transfer it back to the ground in the summer when someone is using air conditioning. We did install a geothermal process in the Ulysses S. Grant home in St. Louis. Who would think a little shop like ours would do a job like that?”
Rick has two daughters, Leslie and Lauren.
